Jewelry can be one of the most precious and sentimental items we own. Learn how to care for your treasures and protect your heirlooms for years to come.
Limit exposure to the sun’s rays and heat.
Extensive amounts of light can fade or damage some stones, and excessive heat and sudden temperature changes can cause some stones to fracture.
Keep away from chemicals.
Hairspray, lotion, and perfume can contain chemicals that could damage the surface of delicate gems, like pearls and turquoise. Make sure to apply these first, jewelry should be the last thing you put on and do not wear fine jewelry while using household cleaners.
Clean with warm water, mild dish soap, and a toothbrush.
This is our recommended method of cleaning. We do not recommend ultrasonic machines because not all gems and jewelry can be cleaned with them. The machine’s vibration can shake gems loose, or even break them.
Remove before showering.
Prolonged exposure to hot water can wear away the luster of your gold metals, leaving them looking dull. Steam will make your silver jewelry tarnish faster.
Remove before sleeping.
Sleeping in your jewelry can cause necklace chains to stretch prematurely. Setting can also become compromised if they snag on a pillow or sheet.
Remove before swimming.
Be sure to remove your jewelry before swimming. Chemicals (like chlorine) used in swimming pools and salt in the ocean can harm jewelry.
Remove before exercise.
Certain exercises can leave your metal and gems scratched. Wearing rings while weightlifting could cause them to warp out of shape, especially when they are made of softer metals such as silver or gold.
